General information

Toilets on Queensland construction sites

From 1 January 2025, Queensland’s Work Health and Safety Regulation sets out amenities requirements for construction projects where the construction work costs over $250,000. In summary, from WorkSafe Queensland:

  • The principal contractor must make sure toilets are reasonably available to each construction person. Relevant factors include the size of the site (for example, toilets within 100 metres of where work is being done), multilevel buildings and the number of workers.
  • Generally there must be at least 1 toilet for each 15, or part of 15, construction persons.
  • Designated female toilets are required on many projects: at least one if there are more than 15 construction persons on a small project ($250,000 to $7.5 million), and one for each 100, or part of 100, construction persons on a large project (over $7.5 million). They must be close to other toilets, reachable without going through a male block, clearly signed, restricted to female construction persons and fitted with a sanitary bin.
  • All toilets need a seat and hinged lid, hand and face washing facilities inside or immediately next to them, lighting, and access in an emergency.

On smaller projects, and at other workplaces, the person conducting the business or undertaking must still provide adequate facilities for workers, including toilets, drinking water and washing facilities, as far as is reasonably practicable.

This is a summary, not legal advice. Check the current rules for your project with WorkSafe Queensland or your safety adviser. Before you order

What to work out first

  • How many people will use the facilities, and whether you need separate or designated female toilets
  • Which services are on site: sewer, water and power, or none
  • When you need them on site
  • Where they’ll sit: firm, level ground with truck access, clear of overhead power lines
  • Whether you need showers, change space or an accessible unit

Send photos of the set-down area with your quote request. Read our delivery guide.

How many toilets do I need?

On Queensland construction projects covered by the amenities rules, the general minimum is 1 toilet for each 15, or part of 15, construction persons, plus designated female toilets depending on the project’s size and workforce. Other workplaces and events have their own considerations, so tell us how many people will use the facilities and for how long. Source: WorkSafe Queensland, WHS Regulation 2011 (Qld) Schedule 5A
